Among the greatest, among the most pleasing and the most stupendous things in the life of Don Bosco, we find this: he had the foresight to understand and to make a reality of that peace which must exist between the soul of a catholic and that of a citizen."
Cardinal J.B. Montini (Paul VI)

Vietnam — Sports and religion... a mix that works

(Vietnam) —  A unique program of sports and religion is keeping kids off the streets and out of trouble.  A Salesian parish in Ho Chi Minh conducts this program during the summer vacation from school.  Anne Nguyen Hai Co, 13, and her friends, start their day at Binh An Thuong parish by attending  mass.  Anne, who sings in the church choir, wakes up early morning to arrive on time each day.  But she says the effort is well worth it.  “I’ve felt better since coming to church each day,” she beamed.

Fr. Francis Xavier Nguyen Xuan Quang, S.D.B., 48, is pastor of Binh An Thuong parish.  He proudly oversees about 150 local children who take part in the program.  After mass, he serves a nutritious breakfast, then offers an array of sports and games to participate in, including soccer, badminton, volleyball, basketball, chess, dominoes, tic-tac-toe and other traditional games.

The summer program begins in May and runs until early August.  Father Francis says he is so grateful to God and all the generous benefactors that have helped make this program a reality…and given such joy to the youngsters.

“This unique mix of religion and sports promote both physical and spiritual health.  They also provide opportunities to develop friendships, kindness, respect for others, and so many more good qualities among the children,” says Father Francis.

The parents in the community are more at ease knowing that their children are safe and doing something constructive.  “I would dread the summer months, when my children were bored and idle,” commented a parent.  “I always worried about what kind of trouble they could get into hanging around on the streets.  I am now more relaxed knowing they are spending their time at the Salesian parish.  And they seem much happier also.”
