Plan to educate 20,000 youngsters in rural areas in India
(Cittadella) –October 12-14, 2007, the Forgotten Brothers Foundation celebrated its
XX anniversary with a study and planning meeting to expand its work on behalf of youngsters in rural areas of India.
The meeting, held at Cittadella in the Province of Padua, was attended by about 15 priests from India, Nepal and Mexico. Cardinal Telesphore P. Toppo, President of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India, Bishop Lumen Monteiro of Agartala, India, Bishop Joseph Gomes, SDB of Krishnagar, India, and Bishop Rafael Sandoval of Tarahumara, Mexico were also there.
Up to now the Foundation has sponsored over 16,200 younsters in seven Indian States. But Fr. Claudio Bolla, S.D.B., President of the Foundation, aims to be able to help up to 20,000 youngsters in rural areas of India as they move ahead after the Twentieth Anniversary Celebrations.
Mr. Gino Prandina, Vice President of the Foundation, explained that with the slogan: For 20,000 Smiles the Foundation is trying to encourage ordinary people to help less fortunate children who cannot go to school because of lack of money. Salesians in the Kolkata Province are involved in the plan.

Morocco – 70 years for Don Bosco School
( Kénitra) – On October1, 2007 the Don Bosco School in Kénitra, Morocco celebrated the 70th anniversary of its foundation. Even though most of the pupils and staff are Muslims, Don Bosco School is known as a Catholic and Salesian school and appreciated for it style of education.
In the evening after Muslim prayers for Ramadan, the whole school community gathered together for the commemoration. Among those present were the Pacha of the city – the local authorities: Archbishop Vincent Louis Marie Landel, of Rabat, and heads of the various private and public Catholic schools in Kénitra. There was also a good number of Past Pupils and former teachers of the Salesian school including Mrs Mézerais, one of the former teachers who taught in the school for 35 years Over 600 parents also took part.
During the evening, speakers retold the history of the school and looked forward to an even brighter future. At the end of the evening the authorities present signed a parchment that will form part of the ceremony of the laying of the foundation stone of the Don Bosco Institute, a new educational venture on the part of the Church and of the Salesian Congregation.
Cuba – Fifth Meeting for Salesian Communicators
(Santa Clara) - September 28-30, the Fifth Meeting for Salesian Comunicators was held in the Our Lady of Mount Carmel community in Santa Clara. The participants were young people involved in the various Salesian works in Cuba.
Workshops held during the days included one on the ethics of the media and a second, of a more practical nature, on graphfic presentations. The sessions were conducted by teachers from the Dr. Felicia Pérez Formation Center in the diocese of Santa Clara.
During the meeting the Salesian Delegate for Communication in Cuba, Fr. Andrzej Borowiec, presented the Project of the Salesian Communication Center of Cuba, a new initiative promoted by the Salesians that will be based in the Mary Help of Christians communitiy in Havana. The main purpose of the Center will be to promote communication in Salesian circles, encouraging communion among the people, the works and the various activites and to improve the development and the application of communication resources in the education and the evangelization undertaken by the Salesian Family.
In addition Fr Borowiec annuunced that in November publication of a news letter for the Salesian Delegation of Cuba will begin. For this purpose a network of correspondents has been created which will be able to collaborate for the benefit of the Salesian Family. Other initiatives to be promoted by the Communication Center were also announced: a photographic, video and audio archive that will be available to all the works on the Island.
